FoliMesh

Cacti & Succulents for Unreal Engine

Five desert plants — Saguaro, Barrel Cactus, Prickly Pear, Agave and Aloe — arrive as FBX and GLB files that Unreal Engine 5 reads through Interchange. Enable Import Mesh LODs and the LOD0–LOD3 chain lands in the Static Mesh Editor intact; convex hulls come in with UCX_ meshes, and every pivot sits at the base so the plants drop onto sand without offsetting.

Set leaf and spine materials to Masked, Two Sided and the Two Sided Foliage shading model, then paint with Foliage Mode or scatter through PCG. Because foliage instances as static meshes, a whole cactus field stays cheap. Nanite handles the masked cards from 5.1 onward, while the classic LODs keep mobile and non-Nanite builds fast.

Using it in Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine 5 imports FBX, OBJ and glTF/GLB (through the Interchange framework).

  • LODs: enable Import Mesh LODs for an FBX that contains LOD meshes, or add LOD1–LOD3 later in the Static Mesh Editor via LOD Import.
  • Custom collision: FBX meshes named UCX_<MeshName> are imported as convex collision.
  • Leaf materials: Blend Mode Masked, Two Sided, and the Two Sided Foliage shading model for light passing through leaves.
  • Place trees with Foliage Mode or the PCG framework; foliage is rendered as instanced static meshes.
  • Nanite supports masked materials since UE 5.1. Keep the classic LODs for mobile and other non-Nanite targets.
